Power in Numbers: 15 HBCUs Launch National Coalition to Achieve Top-Tier Research Status

July 2026 · Apple Pi Education

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are joining forces in an unprecedented move to claim their rightful place at the absolute peak of academic research. According to reports from UNCF and Howard University’s The Dig, a new national research coalition of 15 HBCUs has officially launched to accelerate institutional innovation and collectively secure "R1" status—the highest designation for research universities in the United States.

Currently, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education designates top-tier doctoral universities with "very high research activity" as R1. While several HBCUs are currently classified as R2 ("high research activity"), none have yet been awarded the coveted R1 status. This new coalition—which includes North Carolina A&T State University, the nation's largest HBCU—aims to dismantle that barrier. By pooling resources, expanding collaborative research, and strengthening their institutional infrastructure, these institutions are creating a formidable network designed to scale their scientific output.

For K-12 students, this structural shift is incredibly meaningful for their math and science identities. When young learners see Black-led institutions commanding high-level research in fields like artificial intelligence, climate science, and biotechnology, the path to a STEAM career shifts from an abstract dream to a tangible reality. It helps students move past the classroom routine to see themselves as future contributors to a legacy of high-level innovation.

This historic partnership reminds us of the power of collective strength and precision. At Math Your Mind, we teach our students that when you know your numbers, you can't be shortchanged and you can't be stopped—in class, in money, and in life. For these 15 pioneering HBCUs, knowing their numbers is the key to unlocking crucial federal funding, expanding doctoral programs, and securing the R1 status they have earned. By mastering the numbers today, these universities are building the world-class research hubs where our students will lead tomorrow.
